MY HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED

Posted on September 26, 2013 @ 4:30am

I left the corporate world sixteen years ago when I reached my own personal pinnacle of success - a plant in my office that somebody else watered!  After my departure, I started my own consulting company.  In those early days, I was embarrassed to say that I worked from home - I would pray that it wouldn't come up in a client consultation.  In my heart I believed that if  you didn't have an office outside of your home, you didn't really have a business.  I was pretty sure my clients believed that too.

My how times have changed.  My how I have changed.  Now, instead of hiding my embarrassment that I work from home, I hide my shock/disbelief from my clients that they have to report to an office five days a week and put in a standard work schedule.  A one hour commute each way to work - every day - seems crazy.  Driving on roads at their peak of volume seems plain dumb.  A work schedule that offers little flexibility around life's demands seems out-of-touch.   Working from home where I get to set my own schedule (I'm writing this at 4:00 am, one of my most productive times to work), throw in a load of laundry during a needed computer break and easily handle a change in plans if one of my boys needs to stay home from school is routine for me.

My hope is to help those leaders of organizations who are still holding tight to out-dated 9:00 - 5:00 work models to see that people will work hard for you even if they are not reporting to an office.  If you've got clear goals and your employees are accomplishing them, is it really that important to dictate exactly what their day looks like?
